Hi all

First of all, I wish to thanks for the excellent forum and a lot of people helpful here especially PJW, Peter, Reuben, Dorothy and so on.

I took the exam Mod 2 and 3 this year.

Mod 2,
-the stopping headway calculation is tough for me. I could not have sufficient time to think and provide the answer. I thought that after I finish the layout, I will have some time left but it did not. So just did only part a and b not c

-brake rate is changed from 0.5 m/s/s to 0.7 m/s/s and train length becomes 230 m

-i think the timetable headway is about 5 min as I found out there are 12 trains per hour (taking worst case) and I divided 5 by 2 because freight trains and stopping trains dominate the headway so let's say 2.5 min. This will be ok with 3-aspect signalling with 40% contingency if i did not miss anything.

-the layout asked us to draw the double slip points. I didn't do it well.

-i designed 4-aspect signalling at platform and tried to manage 3 aspect in the rest of the layout and failed to give 2 aspect signalling at the terminal staion.

-I took too much time to find the consistency distance for signal spacing and finally did not finish the added on signal indicators. Just did some parts.

-I had 5 min to provide the route box before time's up.

I am not sure I can pass with high marks as I wish. However, if there is no big shock, I should pass it.

Mod 3
-I did the control table question with confidence. I think I am good with that.

-Aspect sequence was my attempt with 3-aspect signalling. All distance for signal separation can be covered with BD.

-last question I chose is about a route proving before the signal is clear(question 6) as I remember. It is 2-page long for the answer but not sure I can make the examiner happy though I have read the question carefully.

If everything is what I expect, i should be ok for mod3 but not sure again.

Now it would be great if I know the result before next year.

Do you have any idea? When unofficial result can be given ?

Thanks and I will take a break and start it again soon maybe next month )
Although it had a particular use in earlier years for candidates in mod3 drawing up their own Control Table blanks, it has been pointed out in more than one Exam Review that is also useful for other modules when there are large diagrams to draw or beneficial for a tabular presentation. Therefore it would seem to me that it should have been provided for use by candidates as desired, as in previous years.
I'd be interested to know whether situation affected other centres as well.
Certainly something I intend to take up with the IRSE when a suitab;e opportunity presents itself.

Dear members,

First I was surprised to see the question paper. Panicked. Everything was out of control after that. Frankly to say, not able to concentrate on the operating requirements. Couldn't able to apply signalling knowledge while placing the signals.

After the exam, when i thought about it, I have few opinions.

1. if I could have made my mind calm, I could have done it better.
2. I should not have anticipated questions like the previous years. As a Designer, should have applied my knowledge whatsoever the kind of layout & requirements maybe.

Though disappointed, I will take this as an opportunity to improve myself.

Thank you,

Hello All,

Just thought I'd share my experience and feedback with you on the Mod 1 and 7 exams I took in London this year.

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank PJW for his efforts, time and advice in helping the London Study Group prepare for the exams. Much appreciated Peter, I think without your help we would have definetly struggled, even more so on Mod 1!

I must say the Mod 1 exam which was so controversial last year was actually generous in terms of the number of questions you could pick to answer. There were no suprises with any of teh questions and it seemed to be less diffficult than I had expected!

I answered questions on human error, degraded modes and maintenace risks and mitigations. I did however feel that weirdly enough the Mod 1 exam this year could have also passed as a Mod 7 exam paper because the nature of the questions have seen them come up in Mod 7 quite often in the past. The only major issue I had in this paper was that of time. If I fail, this will probably be the underlying issue as I could not get all my points down in the time. Given that these exams are about demonstrating your breadth of experience and knowledge, and that now the Mod 1 questions are designed to be more broad than before, it is not possible to cover the broader points and cover the topics under exam conditions in the time given. I timed myself per question and found myself moving onto the next question each time leaving gaps to come back to in the last 15minutes or so, but that did not work out and therefore alot of the stuff I wanted to include in my answer was missed out.

I felt Mod 7 was a bit more of a suprise, I actually struggled to pick my 3 questions and ended up reading questions again into the exam slot. There were no questions on V&V, Project lifecycles or risk management/processes.
I answered the questions on right side failures, design considerations of a controllers terminal and I cannot remember for the life of me what the 3rd question was about!

The other issue with the exam was that throughout the day, we utilised one room for all exams which had no air conditioning and you couldn't open the windows due to heavy traffic noise outside. So by the afternoon exams, the room turned into somewhat of a sauna and to be honest was not the best environment to be taking exams in.

Speaking to other candidates on the day, the theme and general feedback semed to be the same for everyone. I'm glad they are out of the way now and I do hope that for the effort I gave this year, I pass both papers!
