2016 Q10 Aspect Sequence Chart

Hi all,

I am looking at 2016 Q10 and I just want you guys to confirm my assumptions are correct, because the assumptions I think I'm using are creating an ungodly complicated aspect sequence diagram, and I havn't come across such a complicated one in any study materials so far which is making me think my assumptions are incorrect.

I have gotten all my info from the modern signalling handbook 5th edition or from the IRSE mod3 study guide.

Assumption 1: all signals capable of showing stop, therefore no distant signals
Assumption 2: using standard overlap of 180m, i.e. there are no reduced overlaps
Assumption 3: Signal sighting is all OK, i.e. reading times are all above 8 seconds, there are no obstructions to this, as such I don't need any banner/splitting banner repeater signals.
Assumption 4: The signals are spaced too close for 3-aspect so it must be 4 aspect signalling (modern signalling handbook page 62 says 3 aspect ones are between 1600 and 2400 m apart)

Assumption 5: Signal 23, the turnout is 130kmph down to 80kmph, this delta is >16kmph so I need approach control, the initial speed is >96kmph so it can't be "Approach control from yellow preceeded by a double yellow" type, and Approach control from Red seems too restrictive for this so I'm thinking Approach control from yellow with flashing yellows.

Assumption 6: it says this layout has stopping and non-stopping trains on the up fast so that means Signal 27 turnout has the same approach control as assumption 5

Assumption 7: Signal 29 the turnout is 80kmph down to 65kmph, as this delta is <16kmph I do not need approach control,

I guess the fact that I think 23 and 27 both need approach control with flashing yellows is making my aspect sequence diagram huge and complicated. What do you think of these assumptions?

Here are my comments on an attempt received.

One of the routes from 107 was omitted; I understand that this had been quite a common oversight by candidates for the exam itself.

I have amended the depiction of the MAY-FA for signal 105 and also showing the fall-back MAR for that route.

I found the depiction of the approach release for 201 not as clear as should have been.

One of the stated assumptions does not seem to match the chart; not convinced that the other assumptions needed stating, but have noted some I think should have been added.

Overall though a reasonable attempt; it certainly tried to answer the full question, although I also made some comments on the written elements.

Only find the model answers of questions pertaining to aspect sequence in the CD sent by IRSE, no question and layout can be found.

Hi Guys,

I have had ago at 2012 Q11 from Module 3. I would appreciate if anyone could look into my attempt and come with comments. I have some doubts for signal 105 reading at 207 signal using flashing yellow.

Dear Members,
I have solved and attached the aspect sequence chart for 2011 Module 3 question No 11 and also attached the Module 3 question paper.
Kindly have a look and give your valuable comments.
Kindly correct me if I’m wrong.

Note:
1.All the Down slow signals are placed with inadequate braking distance,
2.Consecutive double yellows & Approach Release from Red features are used,
3.I feel there is no use of providing ROL for the signal 111 and 113.
4.It is assumed that the rear signal of 105 and ahead signal of 117 are placed based on the braking distance.

Hi signal professionals:

I am still new to the signallling industry.
I have few questions as follow

1. " what is signal aspect diagram" ?

2. is "signal aspect diagram" = "signal aspect sequence"

3. can anyone provide a copy of 'signal aspect diagram' or "signal aspect sequence", i have no idea what's looks like ?

4. how would you draw out the aspect sequence for all the signals a driver would see before reaching a red signal.
