My query is if you only had access to IRSE books/publications as an IRSE member, any publication online and could only teach yourself i.e. had access to only this forum but no other industry professional. Does anybody have any advice on what the reading list would be to achieve the learning objectives set out in the syllabus.

Hi, my name is To-Sum. The following was what I've sent to known candidates of London study group, please reply/message me if you're interested in joining study group(s) in London for the 2015 exams. I hope to gather the combination of modules which people are interested in, then set study group(s) for the majority. Hopefully, we'll gather as much like-minded professionals together as possible, to help each other to pass the exams.

Dear all,

It was a nice occasion to meet up with those who attended the IRSE Young Member annual seminar last Friday. Thanks to IRSE YM committee for organising an interesting selection of topics.

Study Groups, let’s get it rolling again!! The coming year’s exam will be on the 3rd Oct 2015*, which only leaves us 40 weeks to prepare!!! Seems far, but there’s a lot to cover and practice. Let’s get ourselves organised.

In yesteryear, there were two study groups in London, one based in LU premises and focused in Mod 3 & 5, the other based in Interfleet and focused in Mod 1 & 2. Vivich & myself co organised the LU group, and Firas was the organiser of the Interfleet group.

In the coming year, we are keen to set up study-group(s) for those who would like to take exam(s), or to share/update experience.
Study groups are not (always) boring and geeky, it is also an excellent chance for networking with like-minded professionals. The railway industry is not a very wide sector, it’s beneficial to ones career to achieve recognised qualification within this industry and to know people in this close community.

To help yourself in getting through the module(s) and the organisers to organise, please let us know of the following details. We would like to set up study-groups for modules where there’s enough registered interests. Please fill in the following to assist the organisers to set up study-group(s).

Name -
Module(s) interested -
Company working for -
Where your usual workplace is based at -

To assist your choice, the following should answer some FAQs:
WHAT:
Module 1 – Safety of Railway Signalling and Communications
Module 2 – Signalling the Layout
Module 3 – Signalling Principles
Module 4 – Communications Principles
Module 5 – Signalling & Control Equipment, Applications Engineering
Module 6 – Communications Equipment, Applications Engineering
Module 7 – Systems, Management & Engineering

WHERE: location is not decided yet, we’ll look at concentration of people interested and where facilities are available.
For study groups around the country, please visit the IRSE website: http://www.irse.org/membership/publicdoc...20July.pdf

WHEN: Usual study-group hours: 5pm-7pm after workdays (There may be follow-ups over a pint or two)

HOW: During the session, the group will schedule topics to discuss, which may be the form of group discussion or lecture by experts. Self-study hours, this may depend individually, but 2-3 hours per week as minimum. Assuming you’re working in the railway industry, there’ll be experts in your workplace to help you out. Once registered as an IRSE member, study packs are accessible via the IRSE website. Otherwise, there’s a smart ar*e called Google.

WHO: Anybody can sit the exam(s), with the following caveat. Candidates has to be registered with IRSE as Associate Member of IRSE (AMIRSE) as the minimum level of membership. Deadline for application for membership from non-member who wish to sit the 2015 exam is 28/02/2015*. Closing date for submission of applications of 2015 exam is 30/06/2015*. Membership application form can be found in: http://www.irse.org/membership/public/ap...nform.aspx

Hi Everyone,

I am thinking about doing 4 modules this year and would like to get everyone's perspective and experience doing 4.

I currently have 7 years experience ranging from faulting & maintainence, installation and recently design. Currently I'm a licenced signalling designer. The modules I have looked at are 1,2,3 & 5.

I am not sure whether to do a few this year then a few the next. I would like to sit them in one go.

Any opinions are welcomed.
Thanks

I was considering sitting the exams, it,s would be a lot of work to extend my knowledge to achieve passes in 4 modules but with effort I feel I could have a good go. I,ve read though some sample questions and as a result feel more positive about sitting the exams.
However on reading though the membership application form less so, I am worried that I have learned my signalling knowledge though experience, reading and a general interest in the signalling equipment I,ve installed each working day for the last 15 years or so, rather than formal signalling courses or a university degree.
Also at my low level,( licensed signalling installation team leader), I simply don,t know any IRSE members or fellows who could sign my application form.
I am prepared to do the work but worry that after passing the exams I still would not be excepted for membership.
Please advise is membership not an option for someone like me?

I am trying to access the competency checklist and information on the scheme to understand the IRSE signalling design license requirements however I have had no luck on the IRSE licensing website as it keeps directing me to a page with an error message on it.

If anyone can give me any guidance it would be much appreciated as I am thinking about starting to log and document my competencies in order to help towards a license of some sort. Many thanks.

Hi all, I have just started work at Serco Docklands as an Assistant Project Engineer within Signalling. It is a completely new area for me and I am looking to start working towards the exams for 2011. I completed a BEng in Mechanical Engineering and have worked in the Rail industry for 2.5years but in project management. I would appreciate it if I can get some pointers from anyone as to what would be the first steps in terms of physical studying. I've done my background reading on this forum and have read the introductory threads. I am in the process of applying for membership and once the exam registration is up on teh website I will be completing that also. Additionally, I will be attending the YM AGM on 20th Jan to help me get started. In the meantime, has anyone got info on the following?

Is it ambitious to undertake 2 modules per year bearing in mind I have to learn from first principles(I am quite worried...)? I'm not quite sure whether these exams are designed for people coming from backgrounds other than signalling and therefore the level of difficulty will be higher for me?

I have not seen any set information regarding study groups in London for 2011, anyone know where they may be held?

Can I get hold of the textbooks/technical papers etc at the IRSE Library and if neccessary purchase the listed textbooks? I am also particularly interested in the "green booklets" and technical papers. Atleast then I have all the material and can get started on studying.

Do I get access to past papers when I have completed an exam registration including model answers? I have already got a copy of the 2010 papers.

Are there any tutorials held anywhere alongside the study groups to aid with your independant learning?

I have alot of questions in mind but do not want to bombard you with all sorts right now! I want to make sure I understand what I am letting myself in for so I can prepare well and remain commited and focussed.

Many Thanks

As some will have guessed from previous messages from myself, I am REALLY struggling with the exam technique aspect. I am way off getting the answer from brain to paper via pen and ruler in the time allowed, for any question, any paper.

My target modules are M1 (obviously) and M4 M6 M7.

My ideas go something like this.

I've put off M4 and M6 until 2011 when study pack material is expected, and myself will be trying to organise a study group, with at least one work colleague interested too. Both comms modules I am confident of technical knowledge and I'd aim not just to pass, to to exceed. M1, I am also confident of subject knowledge, so again don't want to waste an exam attempt where because of abysmal technique get a minimum pass when I know I could do much better.

Thats leaves M7. My current thoughts are to sit M7 this year (I've not registered, know the deadline approacheth) simply to get one real exam experience under real not mock conditions, but expect write it off as an almost certain failure.

A question then, if one fails any Module, is there an any accumulation of failure that reaches a limit, or can you re-sit several times. Obviously I'm not planning for multiple failures, just this one!

Would such an appraoch be taken dimly by the examiners ?
I am thinking of joining as an associate member, and working towards the module1, do you think this is advantageous in my career.

Yes but I wouldn't advise doing module 1 first, but do one of the other ones initially.

Re headway calculations, suggest you look in the Module 2 thread or use the "Search" facility from the green bar at the top of the page to find some examples such as

Someone contemplating a journey from A to B would probably:
a) know something about the destination- (where it was, what it was like, intended arrival time, why they desired to get there etc.),
b) make sure that they were aware of the various options, ensure that any applicable constraints were taken into account and have what resources they needed to undertake the journey,
c) be sure where they were actually starting from.

Similarly for a railway project it is important to have:
a) a specification of what is required to be achieved,
b) understanding of the factors that constrain how it could be implemented, and
c) the knowledge of the existing status of the infrastructure etc.

It should be no different for you deciding to sit the IRSE Exam; you should:
a) make sure you are clear about the role of the exam,
b) understand the scope of the syllabus and what is expected of you in the exam,
c) evaluate your existing level of knowledge of various topics,
d) determine how much time you can commit to study and what other constraints apply,
e) decide which module(s) are best for you to start with.

In order to help you do this, I have placed a couple of separate documents to download in the post below.
