The idea is that everyone attending the Saturday 3rd August session has already attempted their selection of 3 questions and sent to me prior. If you know your actual candidate number utilise that, otherwise choose a random 4-digit number.
At the session I will distribute copies of the various anonymous attempts which we will then discuss.
Others who are preparing for the exam but are not members of the London study group, may care to contribute their attempts and will thereafter share in the feedback.

It is interesting to reflect how different the UK situation is now from when the question was set. I guess this the date explains why it was worded to reflect "regulatory bodies" plural- it is not so obvious how to answer in current context- however this problem is no different to that which may have faced non-UK candidates back in 2002....

Reliability, Availability, Faults & Failures have proved a bit of a stumbling block.
The session therefore did not cover the question etc as was originally anticipated but concentrated in bolstering this general topic area.

Attached is a list of relevant definitions with some additional explanation; note that where different literature and standards adopt noticeably different definitions of which I am aware then I have generally given multiple ones alongside so it is easy to see the similarities but also the differences in utilisation.

For example the distinction when discussing a train there is a clear distinction between Availability (is it ok to leave the depot on time) and Reliability (does it complete its day's diagram without failing) as it undertakes a "mission", but the definitions inevitably have to be slightly different for something that is on 24/7/365 continuous duty such as an interlocking.

I have also attached an extract of presentation used as well as a series of 20 questions that should help you put yourself into the mindset of trying to think ahead into the later life-cycle stages, in just the same sort of way that anyone does when planning a journey / holiday away etc. and it is important to have "got everything in place" before starting off on the adventure.

The Study Pack is showings it age, because the references to the CDM Regulations in the text and last activity clearly relate to the earlier version which was superseded in 2007. Hence although the broad thrust remains the same, the specific nomenclature used of the roles etc no longer exists.

This Powerpoint attachment aims to summarise them and thus addresses activity1.7 but in a modern context.

These regulations are UK law rather than an enactment of EU legislation; I am not sure whether there is any similar legislation applicable in other countries. I guess that there will always be some form of Health & Safety law, but there may not be anything directly comparable.

Whereas rail infrastructure work is clearly within scope, there is no getting away from the fact that its wording is obviously envisaging a building site and the constuction of some form of building or structure and its associated electrical services etc. Whilst significant physical construction does feature in signalling projects, application to all elements can be incongruous. One example of this is the adress of the site needed for completing form F10- railway lines by their nature are long and thin and go from place to place, does a data change within an existing system housed inside a building which is 100 miles away constitute a "construction site".............

Slightly updated version- original replaced. When slightly rearranging pagination I found that I had erroneously given two pages the same number and had jumbled the sequence of some text so have corrected; however actuall content vitually identical.

I placed this here for 2 reasons:
1. To make accessible some idea from SAFEWARE that people may have difficulty accessing otherwise

2. To demonstrate the idea that when reading an item of reference material, a student should not just purely read, but do something to focus attention onto what they discerne as key messages. This can be by notes in margin, underlining, highlighting etc if you own the original book. Alternatively make own list of bullet points, take some salient quotes etc. Obviously the scale of what you should "capture" is determined by what is new to you or challenges your pre-held view; generally waste of time summarising that which is already part of your understanding and experience. In this case of course, I did this to summarise for others, rather than myself so have hopefully given a reasonable overview of content.

The reasons why a student should do this when studying are:
a) makes the person really READ and concentrate to determine what needs to be captured by the filter; otherwise it is alltoo easy to skim, turn the pages with mind only half on the task
b) the act of doing something helps incorporate into memory
c) the end result can be filedd to be reviewed in the month before the exam and thse prompts should cause more of the content to come flooding back; have probably reduced content to between 5-10 percent of the original which makes it quick for skim reading just what has already been selected to be the really important stuff.

Hence hope this is useful not only for the content itself, but to give an example of the sort of thing that a student should be doing dutring their initial stages of exam preparation- i.e. absorbing relevant content.
