I am thinking of joining as an associate member, and working towards the module1, do you think this is advantageous in my career.

Yes but I wouldn't advise doing module 1 first, but do one of the other ones initially.

Re headway calculations, suggest you look in the Module 2 thread or use the "Search" facility from the green bar at the top of the page to find some examples such as
this one

Which module would you deem as appropriate, I was under the impression that you had to do mod1 first (compulsory) before you could do any others, what is the best for a beginner. I will be learning from home as my work on the infrastructure limits me to any sort of luxuries like study groups sadly, what literature etc do you receive once you have applied and decided upon your module?
Many thanks

Module 1 is compulsory, but you DO NOT need to do first.
I suggest that someone ought generally to start with the module that is closest to their "day job"; from your posts I think you are likely to be most familiar with equipment and the trackside application of signalling, so therefore in your case I would suggest Module 5.
Details are not yet available but the YM are hoping to arrange a Study weekend for module 5 later in the year so this may prove useful.

For more information re the exam then I suggest you download the attachments from an earlier post in the Just Starting thread
