M4 M6 2011 study material + London study group
#11
there is some interest for 4 and 6 within LU - as far as i know, none of us has of yet reviewed the sylabus in full so not fully decided whether to go for these ones.

knowing our approach last year, we didnt apply/start properly until about May

I was at the exam review last night Firstly, there was no-one who had marked mod 4 or 6 there. I think 4 people took mod 4 in 2010, 2 people took mod 6!

I asked about a study pack - There is no study pack material - we were advised that the study material is probably all contained within the IRSE Railway Telecommunications book (it looks pretty heavy!)

Also, PJW and Peter said they will look into whether they know any telecomms experts who may be willing to attend a study group to help give us some pointers.

There were 4 or 5 of us who were interested in sitting/studying for mod 4 and 6.

Thanks.

I was unable to make the exam review :o( again because of the day job theres just too much going on right now.

At least its good to know there will be no study pack, makes it a bit easier than an indeterminate if/but/maybe/maybenot situation.

On the plus side I have found someone I may be able to convince or coerce into giving help pointers. I'm still working on that.

I am afraid that I can confirm this; I did get in touch with one of the Telecoms examiners to ask about my recollection and he replied:
There were indeed two people who offered to write something a couple of years ago, at the request of Colin Porter. A couple of the exam committee aproved their synopsis, but I'm afraid that is as far as it went, and to my knowledge nothing was ever forthcoming.

Thanks Peter for following this up.

At least it means we know where we stand i.e. there will be no study material.

I hope to be at the London IRSE lecture on Wednesday ... maybe ... day job permitting ...

I have been in contact with the person Tom Lee suggested. He sounds quite prepared to get involved given the committment being reasonable.

I have asked him if he could put together a little synopsis of recent deveopments (i.e. those things that would postdate the publication of the Railway Telecommunications book) which he believes candidates should be aware and give sources where details can be studied. He expressed his willingness to make comments upon attempts at Telecomms questions and might even be persuaded to make a guset appearance at a London Study Group if one gets off the ground. So a good lead I hope........

I also hear that there was a Thorrowgood Scholar awarded for 2010 exam and that he was a Telecomms person. Very fitting in Paul Jenkins Presidential year. In due course perhaps he could be prevailed upon as well.

I'm going to be sitting Mod 6 in October 2011.

A little background - I've received exemption from completing Mod 4 because of the communications-based Masters degree I completed.

I gather there's another meeting on the 11th May - I aim to be there.

Alastair Hayden is the person who would know, as he organises these Templar House sessions, broadly on an alternate week basis. I thought there was actually a session last week, BUT with the number of Bank Holidays and short weeks we have been having recently, a lot of people have been on leave and I could well believe that they have become out of phase with my understanding. I am currently working nights testing in South Wales so am out of it at present.

I think many do find their degrees give exemption for the Principles paper, but not for Module 6 which is the specific Railway Applications paper.
