This layout, as many others, is best signalled with 4 aspects in a limited area but interfaces with 3 aspects elsewhere.

Attached is a presentation having a couple of slides suggesting how an attempt could have been modified to implement the transitions necessary, but the inital slides attempts to explain the theory behind the 3 possible options for a 3 to 4 aspect transition.
