How did you get the 2014 question? It is not available on the IRSE site. Did you remember it from the exam?

No. I did not remember it. Our invigilater made copies of the questions. We have been looking at some as training exercises.

Students taking the exam can ask for copies of the papers from the invigilators after all exam centres are closed. They eventually get put on the IRSE site. If you took the exam this year, ask your invigilator for a copy in the mean time.

I don't know any invigilators. Who should I ask?
(Plus I only do one exam a year so leave the exam centre before it's closing thus can't ask then and there)

I have asked Mark Watson Walker & Colin Porter to place them on the IRSE's website quite a while ago now; if I get to IRSE London meeting next week then I will gently remind.

I have actually acquired copies from a friendly member of the exam committee. The IRSE does not want us to place the papers on this website en masse but is happy that we include specific questions for discussion etc.

I have tried to practice track circuit calculation as well. But my method is to add 10% Ipickup to ensure reliable operation.

I also have a doubt in part C. I would appreciate it if you can point out what it should be.

Best regards,
Arnut

Your logic looks good here. As for the question that you have about whether to include the 10% in section C, it depends what you are trying to show. If the TC would be set up with it in there, leave it in the numbers and say what you have put in there. If on the other hand, you are carrying out the theoretical limit of the TC and then proposing what contingency to add in afterwards, leave it out. The important thing is to understand why parameters are there and to be able to justify what it is doing and what effect it has on the outcome. You will get a numerical answer whether it is there or not. Whether that that answers the question is dependent on what the question asks!

In this case, I think that the question is implying that each calculation builds on the the previous, so if you have included the contingency early on, carrying on with it included would be the right thing to do.
