07 Feb 2013: YM AGM, seminar and 2012 Exam Review
#1
Date is now confirmed.
Usual format is
  • networking / refreshments on arrival
  • Annual General Meeting
  • Seminar papers on variety of subjects
  • networking /refreshments
  • Exam Review- statistics, report, hints, briefing of future changes, chance to ASK examiners questions
  • adjourn to the pub around the corner, perhaps with examiner or two to conitnue discussions

Imagine this year will be much the same; certainly I know I have agreed to do a session in the seminar portion.

See flyer attached (same content saved as a "doc" as well as the "docx" receved) with details how to reserve your free place for all or part of the event-

[N.B.- Only attending the very last activity isn't really the done thing- does not give a good impression of your professionalism and studious nature!]

Re the Exam Review, Tony Kornas has let me know that this year (the first that I can recall) be a presentation from the Telecomms modules 4 & 6) examiners; either presented by one of them (depends on whether on the day they can attend) or himself. This is in response to feedback given to them last year, so hopefully it will be appreciated.

This year for the first time the Exam Review was video recorded; we were informed it will be uploaded to the members' area of the IRSE, but note that this may take some weeks.

I'll attempt to write post my summary as soon as I have done other urgent items, but nothing that dramatic.

EXAM FORMAT STAYS THE SAME NEXT YEAR AS THIS.
Usual pleas-
1. Read the question.
2. Understand the question.
3. Answer the question.
4. Be careful to state assumptions, explain reasoning and say WHY.
5. Write legibly.
6. Concentrate on getting lots of ideas across rapidly and clearly- tables and bullets are often good.
7. Provide diagrams when aked and annotate suitably; diagrams can also be a good methodology even if not explicitly demanded. May be a good idea to use the A3 unlined paper for larger diagrams.
8. Manage your time equally between questions and according to mark allocation within each.

However do keep looking at IRSE News throughout the year as there may be some detail changes (such as there not being the facility to photocopy blank sheets of Control Tables) and if so they will be announced in IRSE News.

Also a reminder that candidates should not expect to find any particular favourite question come up every year, and be prepeared to find the wording of questions such as that relating to headway calculations in module 2 which has remained constant over several years then changing without prior notice.
In particular for module 5:

a) Track Circuit calculation question MAY appear in 2013 but even if it does may only be a part of a question.

b) Level crossing sequence question MAY appear in 2013 but even if it does may only be a part of a question.

c) Points might well feature in 2013, but perhaps in a oblique way (as in 2012 being with respect to the writing of a Test Plan involving them).

There are no guarantees- other than the questions set will be a fair reflection of the syllabus of the module.

It was the IIRSE itself who were recording and should have place on their website.
However I never checked they actually did this.

I would have expected that it would have been placed in the memevbers only section o their website;
http://www.irse.org/knowledge/public/tec...casts.aspx
but can't see it there.

I am at IRSE on Thursday so will enquire for you. I didn't bother typing up all my notes on the basis that it would be made available......

The IRSE did put video on their website quite a time ago; unfortunately it is a bit hidden. You need to sign into the members area (obviously if you to sit the exam then you must be a member and hence you are eligible to get access to this- you have to enter your details and get a user ID and password).

http://www.irse.org/knowledge/members/we...ecent.aspx

I have requested that the IRSE link to it from their Exam page so that it is more obvious
