2008 Module 2 Calcs for Main line layout, Sort of signalling in branch line
#1
Dear Members,
2008 Examination – Module 2 - Main line layout

Permitted speed for passenger trains – Main lines – 160 km/h
Permitted speed for passenger trains – Branch lines – 100 km/
h

Headways at minimum signal spacing and at a speed of 140 km /h
Fast passenger train following fast passenger train – 2 minutes
Fast passenger train following stopping passenger train – 4 minutes
Station dwell times – 30 seconds

By using headway speed 140 km/h, we can find the sort of signalling in main line.
How to find the sort of signalling in branch line ?

Kindly clarify. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
NJK

I am not really sure that I understand what you believe the problem is; I may have missed your point.

You know the speed of trains on the branch (100km/h), so you calculate the braking distance.
You know what capacity is needed on the branch (from the train running requirements and the operating requirements looked at against the track layout) so you determine what sort of signalling provides that economically whilst respecting the minimum and maximum spacing betweeen a caution signal and its relevant stop signal.
I don't actually see what makes you uncertain.

[Be aware that there are other needs to provide stop signals on a layout than purely to provide the requisite headway for following trains.]
