Starting Studying Braking and Headway - PJW - 18-01-2009

Sounds like we have a few people interested in module 2, so lets's make a start.

It doesn't seem that a private area is necessary / advantageous but in the sub-forums I have configured things such that whereas posts are visible straight away, the attachments are not until they are "moderated", thus I'll keepthem secret until the set deadline.

Hi,

I'm just wondering whether there is anything happening in the Virtual Study Group? If so could I have access please?

If not, is anyone else out there interested in trying the same papers at the same time, and comparing/discussing answers? I've made a start on the 2008 paper, Q1.

2004 Layout - Assignement in Study Pack - alexgoei - 12-03-2010

Hello to all in the study group,

I do intend to do the assignment based on the 2004 exam layout found at the back of Appendix G.23 in the Module 2 Study Pack over the weekend and therefore can post it by Monday 15th March (the Ides of March!).

My plan is to do the Layout Calculations for a few years first to get a hang on what I consider to be the most important part of exam. Anyone out there with other views?

I think that is an excellent suggestion; it is a good place to start. What I'll do is set up a subforum as per the module 3 one; i.e. people (no restriction / password needed) can post into it but the attachments will not immediately come visible. Let's set the deadline to be 22nd March to give everyone who is interested a fair chance to do it; at that date I'll make the attachments visible to all and we can discuss.

See Alex's post in this thread; his suggestion of the exercise as a starting place is a good one. Braking and headway calcs are fundamental and the subject is covered in detail in the Study Pack so makes sense to work from that. If anyone has yet to get hold of one but is interested in doing the work, get in touch and I can send the relevant extract.

So suggest you park the 2008 layout for now, but we can then make this the next thing that we consider.

Cheers for your replies.

Good idea so yes, I'll get started on that (although may not make that deadline as I'm on holidays from 16-20th). Will submit my answers whenever I complete it.

RE: Starting Studying Braking and Headway - PJW - 12-03-2010

We'll make a start with considering the calculations that are required for the Mainline layout design. However you should make sure you understand the background to why these are of such fundamental importance; see Study Pack sections 6.9 - 6.12 and then study Appendix G.

To check your understanding there is exercise 1A in Appendix W ; submit your answers to this.

Then attempt the activity in G23 looking at the 2004 layout . You'll find that some numeric answers are given as exercise 1B in Appendix W so to some extent this will allow you to check yourself. However don't expect to get exactly these numbers and indeed in the IRSE Exam getting the "right" numeric answer is not the "be all and end all"; hence submit your answer and pay attention to presenting in a manner that fully explains what and how you are calculating.

Submit your attempts to each as you complete them; I'll set the deadline to be 26th March .

Not exactly overwhelmed with answers to look at this weekend; never mind it gives me a chance to prepare something for the May Signet event instead. Someone has been polite enough to ask for a few more days to complete, so happy to accommodate because I understand the reasons and can replan.

Interesting simularity with the every day world of signalling project work environment I am afraid. Design dates tend to slip (and usually without prediction or even recognition that the deadline has passed), but the project's "end date" is fixed and the testers get squeezed into a diminishing timescale........
